Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Ouch… ouch… ouch!

“What is going on and why does it hurt so bad while pooping?!”

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in and around the anus and lower rectum. They cause passing a bowel movement extremely uncomfortable and unpleasant. They can be painful while pooping, you may experience itching in and around your anus, and they can also cause some bleeding. External hemorrhoids usually appear blue or bright red in color and are mounds of skin protruding from the anus.

When do they occur?

Hemorrhoids usually show up when pressure bears down on your pelvic floor and lower part of your digestive tract. The pressure can be so heavy that the veins in your anus absorb the impact, so much that they swell. During pregnancy this pressure comes from the growing baby, increased blood volume, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and constipation. They can happen at any stage in pregnancy but are most common during the third trimester.

Options for relief

It is common to feel embarrassment when it comes to hemorrhoids. Many women just put up with the discomfort because they know they will resolve once the baby is born. If this is you, you don’t have to do that. There are many ways to get relief. Hemorrhoids happen in more than half of all pregnant women so its nothing to be ashamed of.

Here are some things to try:

  • Witch Hazel reduces itching and pain

  • Try a sitz bath or sit in a tub with 2-3 inches of warm water

  • Apply either wet or dry baking soda to ease itching

  • Lying on your side relieves pressure on your pelvic floor and bowel

  • Use Tucks medicated pads

When to talk to your provider

It is important to reach out to your provider if you notice any bleeding or pain during your bowel movements. Most of the time hemorrhoids are harmless but some may be serious and need medical attention. If you’re uncomfortable and on the verge of trying any over-the-counter laxatives, stool softeners, creams, oils, or supplements to help - it is always best to run the idea by your provider first to make sure its safe during pregnancy.

When in doubt, it never hurts to ask! That is what they are there for.
